The Truth About Ingrown Toenails: Causes, Myths & Treatment Options

An ingrown toenail may seem like a small problem, but if you’ve ever experienced one, you know how a single painful toe can disrupt your day. People often turn to quick fixes—like trimming the nail at home or soaking in vinegar—but these so-called remedies are often myths that don’t address the root cause. Left untreated, an ingrown toenail can lead to infection, chronic discomfort, or even the need for minor foot surgery.

In this blog, we’ll uncover the real causes of ingrown toenails, debunk common myths, and explore the most effective ingrown toenail treatment options available today.

What Exactly Is an Ingrown Toenail?

An ingrown toenail occurs when the edge of your toenail grows into the surrounding skin. This most commonly affects the big toe and can cause redness, swelling, tenderness, and even pus if infected.

Common Causes of Ingrown Toenails

Several factors can contribute to this frustrating problem:

  • Improper nail trimming – Cutting nails too short can encourage the nail to grow into the skin.
  • Tight footwear – Shoes that squeeze the toes can put extra pressure on the nails.
  • Injury – Stubbing your toe or repetitive trauma (e.g., running or sports) can trigger nail changes.
  • Genetics – Some people are more prone to toenail problems due to inherited nail shape.

Poor foot hygiene – Not keeping feet clean and dry may worsen irritation.

Myths About Ingrown Toenail Treatment

Myth 1: You Can Cut Out Your Own Ingrown Nail At Home

Trying to cut out an ingrown toenail at home often makes the problem worse. It can damage the skin and introduce infection.

Myth 2: Home Remedies Cure Ingrown Toenails

Soaking your foot in warm water with salt can reduce discomfort temporarily, but it won’t fix the underlying issue. Home remedies might soothe, but they rarely provide a long-term solution.

Myth 3: Only Surgery Can Help

Not all cases require surgery. In fact, early-stage ingrown toenails can often be treated conservatively by a foot doctor or podiatrist. Surgery is usually reserved for recurring or severe cases.

When to Seek Professional Help

If you’re searching for a “podiatrist near me” because of a painful toe, it’s time to see a professional. You should book an appointment if you experience:

  • Persistent redness and swelling
  • Severe pain when walking or wearing shoes
  • Signs of infection (pus, foul smell, or spreading redness)
  • Repeated ingrown toenails despite home care

Effective Ingrown Toenail Treatment Options

Treatment depends on the severity of your toenail problem. Options may include:

Conservative Treatments

  • Professional trimming – A podiatrist carefully trims and shapes the nail to relieve pressure.
  • Antibiotics – If an infection is present, medication or a topical ointment may be prescribed.

Minor Procedures

When conservative care isn’t enough, nail surgery may be recommended:

  • Partial nail removal – The ingrown edge is removed, allowing the toe to heal.
  • Nail bed treatment – A chemical or laser may be applied to stop that part of the nail from growing back.

The procedure is quick, effective, and typically performed under local anesthetic by a foot doctor or podiatrist.

Preventing Future Ingrown Toenails

The best treatment is prevention. Here’s how you can lower your risk:

  • Trim nails straight across and not too short.
  • Wear shoes that allow your toes enough room.
  • Keep feet clean and dry to prevent infections.
  • Check your feet and nails regularly especially if you have diabetes or circulation issues.
